If there was a song that best demonstrates how love can indeed conquer all, it is this classic ballad from Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt. Simple in appearance, yet very meaningful in its lyrics, “Don’t Know Much” explores the continued insecurities one feels as they go through life meaning that they don’t know much about their future, however, the one thing they do know is that they deeply love their partner. The music video above presents this theme very well and ultimately helps people understand what the song is about.
Up until 1989, both Neville and Ronstadt had had contrasting careers. Linda had been hugely successful in the 1970s on the pop charts, country charts and even the adult contemporary charts. This even included a number 1 hit in the US in 1975. On the other hand, Aaron had not had a single song on the cahrts ever since his first ever hit in 1966, which hit number 2. So effectively, he waited 23 years to have another on the charts.
“Don’t Know Much” hit number 2 on both the US and UK charts and probably due to this commercial success, Neville and Ronstadt recorded 2 more duets “All My Life” and “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby” which were both moderately successful but nothing compared to “Don’t Know Much.”
The wonderful performance of both singers in this song also earned both singers the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and was even nominated for the prestigious Song of the Year.
This song is truly one of the simplest yet finest ballads ever composed. It serves as a model for today’s love songs. It also expresses love in the most simplest yet most powerful manner. Enjoy!
