The way I “discovered” this song from Sergio Mendes is quite interesting. In fact, I didn’t even know who Sergio Mendes was. So I discovered a new artist as well as the actual song Never Gonna Let You Go.
Here’s how the story goes.
I was lying down on my bed the other day and all of a sudden I started to think about songs I’d heard in the past, in particular, my childhood. It was then that I started to recall a certain CD which had about 10 piano songs and which I used to listen regularly a long time ago because they had great songs. I then started to wonder where I could find that CD. It had to be stored somewhere around the house.
So after consulting with my mother, I found the CD stacked away in a little cupboard with a whole heap of other CDs which the household used to listen to ages ago. The CD is called “With Love From David James” and has 10 piano love songs. So I started listening to each one in my room and each song brought back a memory and a smile to my face. It was a wonderful experience!
It wasn’t until I got to the 9th song that I started wondering “who sings that great tune?” The CD cover simply said that the name of the song Never Gonna Let You Go, but that’s about it. So I did a bit of research and discovered that the artist was Sergio Mendes. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that he was in fact Brazilian. So how often does a Brazilian composer write a powerful and memorable song that is so successful?
Sergio Mendes is certainly a very unique artist because he composes in both English and Portuguese and is primarily a bossa nova artist. The fact that he composed an adult contemporary love song is quite rare for him.
Lyrics-wise, this ballad is about asking your ex-lover forgiveness for the wrongs you have committed and setting out to make everything right by opening up and showing more love than ever before.
I feel so fortunate and grateful to have finally discovered this great 80s ballad and this has quickly become one of my favourite love songs of all time.
Below you can find a rare live performance of the song by Joe Pizzulo and Leza Miller in 1984. Although it is a shortened version of Never Gonna Let You Go, it is an absolutely wonderful and emotion-charged performance to be cherished. Enjoy!
