For me, this is the ultimate reunion song. Reunited is all about 2 former lovers who decide to reconcile and reunite after realizing that they are made to be with each other.

It is beautiful. It is majestic. It is just perfect.

There’s no wonder this song was a US number 1 hit in 1979 where it remained for 3 straight weeks.

The lyrics are what stands out the most for me and what makes the song the beautiful song it really is. They illustrate the heartbreak and loneliness that separated lovers feel really well. All of which makes the chorus have a happy and blissful feel to it.

The combination of Herb Fame‘s and Linda Greene’s voices is wonderful and one can sense that they are indeed overjoyed to be reunited and back together again.

Just in case you weren’t aware, “Peaches” has been played by 6 different women ever since the beginning of the group back in the 1960s. Herb Fame’s partnership with Linda Greene was the most successful one of the group’s history.

The group is arguably more well known for its other major hit song “Shake Your Groove Thing” which has been played countless times in TV shows and movies. Yet it was never as successful as Reunited.

I really wish I’d discovered this song much earlier because I would have added it to my list of the The 30 Greatest Love Songs of all time. I could go back and alter the list but for the time being, I will keep it as it is.

I personally think that the feeling of reuniting with your lover and starting afresh is something to behold. I’ve never experienced it personally but I can totally imagine that it must be an incredible feeling.

So if you have reconciled or reunited with a former lover and started once again, Reunited is your theme song.

The other day, as I was heading back home from a dental checkup, a song started playing on the radio which caught my attention and left me completely mesmerized. As a result, as soon as I got back home I did my research and found out the song to be called Baker Street from Scottish singer Gerry Rafferty.

For the whole day I could not get the song out of my head. It’s so addictive and wonderful to listen to. It’s one of those songs you can listen as you walk along a deserted street in the early morning after a big night out. In fact, upon checking up on the lyrics, that’s pretty much what the song is about.

The only difference is that the song is about someone who is down and out and close to giving up on life. And all this is taking place on a London street called Baker Street. In the first part, it talks about how the person thought life would be so easy and yet they now find themselves in a helpless situation where he’s “drinking the night away.” The person seems to find some consolidation that in a year’s time, they will be happy again, but for the time being, they are crying.

The second part of the song talks about they are now planning to move away from the big city and settle down in a quiet little town to “forget about everything” and start afresh. However, he realizes that it won’t be last long and before they know it, they will be on the move again because that’s how life is.

For me personally, this song is representative of the anxiety and isolation people can feel living in a big city. And it’s ironic because in a big city you are surrounded by many people. However, given the busyness of the city, there can unfortunately be very little communication between people.

The highlight of the song is the alternative rhythm. The song starts off with a beautiful saxophone solo and then moves on to a soft rock rhythm. It is then followed by another sax solo and then back to the soft rock rhythm. Finally, the sax solo is joined by a guitar solo which rounds out the song.

The funniest thing about that day when I couldn’t get Baker Street out of my head is that on that very night, I heard a busker playing the exact same song in a tunnel. I couldn’t believe that out of a million songs out there, the busker was playing the one song that I couldn’t get out of my head. Was it a coincidence or something more than that? I’ll never know.

It’s not surprising that Baker Street became Gerry Rafferty’s biggest hit when it peaked at number 2 on the US Charts in 1978. The corresponding album even knocked off the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack from the number 1 position which is no mean feat. Enjoy this classic song from the year 1978.

It’s been exactly 1 month since I’ve posted on this blog. I apologise for not posting content on a more regular basis. A lot of exciting things have been happening in my life which have kept me occupied.

What can I say? Day After Day is the most popular and most successful song from a band which never had a chance live up to its potential. If you haven’t heard about Badfinger or their story, it’s something that any rock lover should read about because it is one of the most tragic and sad stories ever told.

After spending various years playing in pubs and clubs in both Swansea (Wales) and London in the 1960s, the band hit the big time when they became the non-Beatles band to sign up to Apple Records. Essentially, they were endorsed by the Fab Four and were set for stardom. Their breakout hit was a Paul McCartney composition called “Come And Get It” and when the Beatles broke up in 1970, Badfinger was seen as the heirs apparent. This was because they had played with the Fab Four and had a very similar sound.

I could go on about the Badfinger story all day however, this is not the focus of this post. Instead, if you want to learn all about it, I suggest watching a documentary on Badfinger, part 1 of which is below. You can access the other parts from YouTube.

The song Day After Day was written by the lead singer and songwriter Pete Ham shortly after his breakup with his girlfriend. The lyrics show the protagonist’s thoughts being dominated by memories from their relationship and how this keeps him occupied during his lonely times in his room. It’s a very sad song, the emotions of which can be felt through Pete Ham’s vocals.

The most eerie part of this song is that it sounds much like a Beatles song in terms of quality and sound. There’s no doubt that George Harrison playing the slide guitar with Pete Ham helped. I think if you replaced Ham’s voice with Paul McCartney’s, you would find it difficult to tell the difference between both.

If you’re a big Beatles fan like myself, then you should love this song. It’s such a shame that Badfinger couldn’t fulfill the potential that is so evident in this song. My only hope is that people begin discovering and appreciating Badfinger’s music even more.

Day After Day will forever the remain the high point of a band that tragically never fulfilled its potential.

By far, the most famous and enduring hit from Swedish band ABBA, Dancing Queen is one of those party songs that simply cannot be left out. The opening keyboard glissando is the most recognizable of any song written and is the cue to get up and start dancing (preferably like a queen). It’s no wonder that this song remains a favorite among women, yet, there are many men out there who are ashamed to admit their love for this song. However, over time, the song has become of the most loved gay songs and is a favorite within the gay community.

As with some other ABBA songs, Dancing Queen is an interesting mix between disco and pop, yet it is too pop to be disco and too disco to be pop. However, at the time of its release in 1976, the disco movement had just entered the mainstream worldwide and there was no shortage of disco songs ruling the charts. As a result, Dancing Queen became a massive hit worldwide reached number 1 on both the US and UK charts.

The song’s lyrics talk about a young woman, “only seventeen”, who goes out clubbing at night looking for a king. When she gets in the mood for a dance, she dances like a queen and dances so well that she has a lot of fun while attracting the attention of onlookers. However, at the same time, she is a player and teases with the men she attracts, leaving them behind after a little while.

There are a lot of people who can associate with what the lyrics are saying. However, I can guarantee that there are a lot of people who love this song but have not bothered to understand the meaning of the lyrics.

Nonetheless, it’s a wonderful song from the classic era of the 1970s that will forever be played at parties throughout the world. ABBA’s unique sound and talent shines through in Dancing Queen and leaves all of us mesmerised and wanting more.

The other day, as I was going through a list of UK number one songs, I came across this song, Bright Eyes. To my surprise, it was recorded by Art Garfunkel (from the duo Simon & Garfunkel) and was the biggest selling single in the UK in 1979. What surprised me more was the fact that Art Garfunkel had had a moderately successful solo recording career after his split from Paul Simon in 1970. In total, he reached number 1 in the UK on 2 occasions.

The song appealed to me immediately because it seemed like something I’d heard before but never cared to find out the singer nor the name of the song. I’m still unable to determine whether I’d heard this before, but I think it is highly likely.

The first thing you notice about Bright Eyes is that it is very ‘dreamy.’ There is minimal sound from the instruments and Garfunkel’s wonderful voice drives this song throughout. It has a very nice soft rhythm which makes it both memorable and relaxing. This is one of those songs you can turn on to simply relax or to feel a strong sense of tranquility and calmness. The dreamy style of this 70s song could also make you fall asleep.

As much as the song is great to listen to, I still cannot fully understand the meaning of the lyrics. It seems to me that there is a lot of symbolism involved but I can’t work out the meaning. For example, let’s take the following lines of the song:

There’s a fog along the horizon,
A strange glow in the sky,
And nobody seems to know where you go,
And what does it mean?
Oh, is it a dream?

It certainly alludes to the presence of a dream but it also asks what it all means. So for me, if the song is asking what it all means, then how can we (listeners) possibly find out what it all means.

If there’s anyone out there who can decipher this song for me, I would gladly love to hear from you. In the meantime, I think it’s best to just enjoy Bright Eyes for what it is instead of analysing it deeply.

For me, The Long and Winding Road is the official farewell song of the Beatles. This is despite the fact that it was not the last song they ever recorded. In fact, it was recorded in January 1969 during the tumultuous and disastrous Get Back sessions. Due to the infighting and tensions during these sessions, the songs recorded were not released until 1970, and the album was retitled Let It Be. The Long and Winding Road was the last single to be released by the Beatles and it became their 20th number 1 single in the United States, a record yet to be broken.

Another reason why I have always perceived this song to be their farewell is because it was also the final song in the Blue Album, which was my first exposure to the Beatles in the mid-90s. Since then, the Beatles have remained by all time favorite band by a long way and I don’t ever seeing any other band or singer overtaking them. The Beatles will forever be a couple of echelons above all other musical artists in terms of innovation, impact and popularity.

The story of the breakup of the Beatles is also a very sad one, especially for big fans like me. The sad and melancholic nature of The Long and Winding Road represents this. The writer of the song, Paul McCartney, has said that this song was inspired by the growing tensions among the Beatles. The lyrics of the song allude to a sense of helplessness and abandonment:

“But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long long time ago
Dont leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door.”

In the context of The Beatles, I think the ‘long and winding road’ represents the incredible journey the group had had up until 1969, while at the same time emphasising, that their future journey would be a different one for every band member. It’s as if they are all ready to move on from the Beatles but are not quite sure where to go and need someone to lead them.

Every time I listen to this song, all I think about is the music video which accompanies it. The video is a portion from the Let It Be film, and throughout the film, it is clear that all is not well between The Beatles. The sad and dejected faces of all the band members during the performance of this song say it all: the end is near for the Beatles and it is a very sad contemplation.

A lot of debate has raged among Beatles fans since this song’s release due to the 2 main versions of The Long and Winding Road. The original version, is the one in the video above, is a back to basics composition with no lush effects like the most of their music in their final years. The released version was a remixed version by American producer Phil Spector who was given the job to salvage an album from the 1969 Get Back recording sessions. In this version, he recorded an orchestral and choir accompaniment for the song, which gave it a lush feeling, contrary to McCartney’s objectives. As a result, Paul was incensed when he heard the remixed version and used it as one of the reasons for the Beatles’ breakup.

In my opinion, I believe that Spector’s remixed version is superior to the original version intended by Paul. This may be due to the fact that it is this version that I heard first before even finding out that there was actually another version of the song. However, it must be recognized that Phil Spector is a masterful producer (or at least at the time), and his remixing of The Long and Winding Road demonstrates his unique talent. I would love to hear your thoughts about this.

Silly Love Songs is not a song that everyone will immediately like. In fact, many would say that it is a very poor effort from one of music’s greatest musicians, Sir Paul McCartney. Some have labeled it as very cheesy and have compared it to his effort with ‘Ebony and Ivory’ which he recorded with Stevie Wonder in the 80s. Despite the criticism the song received (and continues to), it became one of Wings’ highest-selling singles and one of the biggest-selling singles of the 1970s.

The strangest aspect of this song that people encounter is the “disco” feel of the song. The reason being that it was a genuine attempt from Paul McCartney to adapt to the disco movement at the time. In fact, McCartney was probably the first classic rock musician to try their luck with disco because shortly after, the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart also had a go with success.

The song’s irony is more profound if you take into account its origins. Apparently, according to most sources, when discussing the Beatles and songwriting efforts, John Lennon said that all that Paul wrote were ‘silly love songs.’ Paul responded by composing this song, and the great irony is that Silly Love Songs is a silly love song (according to music critics) on its own.

This song is also a prime example as to why Paul McCartney had the most successful musical career out of all the Beatles after their breakup in 1970. A musician’s ability to adapt to changing music styles is vital if they wish to remain popular over an extended period of time.

I personally find this song to be quite enjoyable and like to listen to it to chill out and relax. Of course, at first, like most people, I absolutely disliked this song. Firstly, because Paul was trying to sing disco, something he’d never done, and secondly, because it is cheesy (I have to admit it). However, I’ve seen through that now and hope you do so when you listen to Silly Love Songs.

There are few songs that ring so true like The Rose by Bette Midler. In fact, the first time I heard it, it left me without words and on the verge of tears. While Bette’s vocal performance is pretty much perfect, it is the lyrics of this song from 1979 that are both sad and empowering. The Rose is a constant reminder that we only live once, and hence we must not fear making the most of our lives.

History Of The Rose

The Rose was written by Amanda McBroom, an American songwriter who also had a career as a singer and cabaret performer. The song itself was the theme song from a movie also titled The Rose, which starred Bette Midler herself. It was loosely based on the life of 60s rock star Janis Joplin and was nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Actress for Midler’s interpretation of the main character. The song became of one of her biggest hits and reached number 3 on the US Billboard Charts in 1979.

Meaning Of The Lyrics

While I do appreciate Bette Midler’s amazing vocal performance, it is the lyrics that really make the song what it really is. They are absolutely beautiful and I challenge you to find better, more empowering lyrics. I could potentially go through every single part of the lyrics and explain them all in great detail, but that would take up many posts. Instead, I would like to focus on dissecting the meaning of a couple of lines from The Rose.

“It’s the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance”

How many times have you chosen not to do something because you were afraid of failure? We, as humans, are sometimes (if not often) fearful of having our hearts broken, either through relationships or business, that we do not allow our hearts to spread love to a greater amount of people. In addition, we do not open our hearts to receive love, care and affection from others around us and hence it never learns to dance.

“And the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live”

Easily one of the saddest lyrics ever written, this reminds me of a famous quote from James Brynes. It goes: “Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity. They seem more afraid of life than death.” We tend to fear a lot of things that have not even happened to us, and this fear constrains our soul and its true potential, and hence, it never learns to truly live.

“Just remember that in the winter, far beneath the bitter snow, lies the seed that with the sun’s love in the spring becomes The Rose.”

Easily the most beautiful lyric in the song, there are few lyrics that are as touching and meaningful as this. You may not realize it, but this final line in the song is a metaphor for the human experience, that despite our failures, downs and problems, there always is and always will be a human love and warmth underneath. It may take a while to come up to the surface, but it is there, and it will get reborn and flourish once again.

Bette Midler Live Rendition

Now it’s time to showcase Bette Midler, and her live rendition of The Rose. Sit back and enjoy one of music’s greatest voices interpreting one of music’s greatest songs.

I really hope you enjoyed the live rendition and understood my analysis of some of the lyrics of this magnificent classic song. We tend to overlook a song’s lyrics and just focus on the beat and rhythm these days. Do yourself a favor and find a song with meaningful and empowering lyrics. The Rose by Bette Midler will never cease to empower people for many years to come.

Have you ever wanted to go on a road trip in such a relaxed mood that you could constantly and intensely feel nature’s elements such as the air and wind and be taken away while reminiscing about your childhood home town? If you do, then there is no better song for you. “Ventura Highway” is possibly the best example of classic soft rock from the 70s and it is mesmerizing for those in the right state of mind.

“Ventura Highway” deals with the person travelling from the cold northern part of the United States to the warm southern part of California. The singer talks about his childhood in the snow during the dark winter months while contrasting this to Ventura Highway where “the days are longer and nights are stronger than moonshine.” There is a tinge of sadness throughout that he is leaving where he came from for a place with a better climate.

“Ventura Highway” became the third hit single for the Anglo-American group America in 1972 and has remained one of their most popular songs since. It reached number 8 on the US Billboard Charts while it only reached number 42 in the UK.

The highlight of this song is the acoustic guitar riff which rings out constantly throughout the song and which puts you in a relaxed state of mind from the very beginning. The vocal performance of Dewey Blunell also helps to achieve that effect.

I hope you truly appreciate classic rock as much as I do and enjoy this great classic tune from America.
