It’s not every day that a song without lyrics becomes a pop hit. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find such a song that become a hit on the charts the world over. But when it does become a pop hit, it can only mean that the tune must be extremely memorable and catchy. “Lily Was Here” is all that and probably more. 3 instruments combine to make a now-popular tune: the drums, the acoustic guitar and the saxophone. I invite you all to listen to it by watching the video above if you haven’t yet done so.

This tune is one of those “I remember that tune, I just didn’t know who it is was by” tunes. The only way I found out who actually played the tune was because the radio DJ was kind enough to tell listeners the name of both the song and the composers simply because he said that he always received calls after playing the song from listeners demanding to know the name of the song. Not one bit surprising.

The song is the main theme of the Dutch movie De Kassiere, which is probably not known by most people. In fact, this song is probably memorable due to the feelings and imagery people attached to it. For me personally, every time I listen to this tune, I imagine myself walking on the streets on a cold, windy and rainy day where everything is pretty much miserable. I’m not sure if you imagine something like that while listening to the tune, but it will most likely not be very positive.

The theme was a huge hit in the Netherlands, staying at No.1 for 5 weeks as well as charting at No.11 and No.6 in the US and the UK respectively. It was also a Top 20 hit in many other countries throughout Europe and the rest of the world. I hope you enjoy this classic tune from 1989 as much as I do.
